Surviving life without sugar, artificial sweeteners and diet soda. Conquering addition for a better healthier me.
November 14, 2012
I'm Josie,
Mom, daughter, sister, friend, business owner, and sugar addicted stress eater..
I was 38 when I got pregnant with my daughter. The same week I got pregnant I had a skiing accident which led to a total ACL reconstruction of my left knee. The rigorous exercise program and healthy eating habits that I had followed for ten years was put on hold. In the years that followed, my fairy tale life of love, marriage, family, health and fitness, began to unravel around me. With that, I became a stress eater and sugar my culprit.
Fast forward … My daughter is 14 and I am 80 pounds over weight, I have tried every diet including the “Raw” diet without success. Today I am challenging myself to change; change my eating habits, change the way I feel about myself, CHANGE.... I will be blogging daily, starting with today, my 53rd birthday. I will share with you my challenges, some solutions I come up with, photos, recipes and each success. It is my hope and desire to make a difference in my life as well as the lives of everyone that visits me here. Thank you for supporting me. I am now publicly accountable to myself and each of my readers. Come back often to read and see how I evolve. My goal for this year is weight loss and wellness. My diet is simple, whole foods and nothing artificial! I am using experience, logic and you to keep me going.

I am dragging behind on my posts but I haven’t been behind with my commitment. I’ve been so busy and when I leave it until the end of the night to post, I’m usually to tired. Tonight is one of those nights.
Next week I’ll have a few new things to post about and more tomorrow.
First of all, I can’t believe I have 80 days today. This an accomplishment for me. A sugar addict without sugar binging. Yes it feels good!
Super Bowl Sunday.. Another day associated with snacking that I am putting in the Holiday Category. I will be participating in this years celebration for sure. THE NY GIANTS are in the Superbowl. Being a New Jersey/New Yorker, I am right in there with the rest of the fans routing for the Giants. But just because it’s a ‘snacking holiday’, that doesn’t mean we can’t have great time and still take care of ourselves by giving our bodies satisfying healthy snacks instead poison. Ok, poison sounds alittle harsh, but that’s really what it is.
Here is a link to some great healthy alternatives to your Superbowl party menu from “FORKS OVER KNIVES”.
Take a minute and watch their trailer. Very informative if your sitting on the fence about eating healthy as a lifestyle. FORKS OVER KNIVES
My guacamole is easy and really good too.
As always, I cook by eye and taste…
3 or 4 Ripe Avocados
1 Tomato
1 Onion
Fresh Lemon
Garlic cloves
Cilantro
Corn Chips
Instructions:
Mash the Avocado (I like it a little chunky)
Dice the tomato
Chop the onion and garlic
Mix all together and squeeze the lemon over it.
Chop cilantro and add to mixture.
Mix together again and serve with some of your favorite corn chips.
Glad you liked to post and shared it. I totally believe the doctors in this film, and read the book, “the China Study,” that it was based on, too. I do struggle with processed foods and alcohol, though. Maybe someday… I just hope I don’t have to get sick first to give it all up. But, as Laura says, exercise is the key to being able to indulge a LITTLE and once in a while.ReplyCancel

I have to try that with the rice cakes. Avocado is a great source of fiber too. But mostly, I LOVE guacamole! and chips. Unfortunately, I eat too many chips. So the rice cakes sounds like a good alternative. Thank you both!ReplyCancel
My guacamole recipe is very similar. I use lime and add a small jalapeno.
Last week I made a batch and used rice cakes (plain whole grain brown rice cakes – salt free) instead of chips. It was great!
It’s a “minute” recipe if you have a food processor.
Just put everything but the avocados in the processor and pulse a few times until finely chopped. Then add the avocados and pulse once or twice and – finished!
“Planning ahead can help aid with weight loss. Portion out oats, dried fruit, pecans or any other nut, and cinnamon. Take it with you, add water, and microwave for 2 minutes. It is an easy breakfast that keeps me full (good source of fiber). Another good option is measuring your favorite high fiber cereal and berries such as blackberries or strawberries.
Enjoy!”
She sent us a picture of all the breakfasts she prepares ahead of time. Great for the working person on the go or the busy mom chasing after babies and just about all of us who have demanding schedules.
Is your inner voice positive or negative? If we heard only positive things from ourselves, we would be much happier and healthier. The problem is, many of us hear different voices, like heathy voice or negative and sabotage myself voice. Which voice we listen to determines what choices we make. (like changing “I can’t” to “I can!”) We have the power to listen to one voice over the other and choose to be healthy. It’s up to us. The words “mind over matter” come to me.
“Mind over matter” is a pretty powerful concept. Take Hypnosis: it’s a form of “mind over matter” and look what hypnosis is used for: fears and phobias, addictions, habit control, pain management, psychological therapy, relaxation, skin disease, soothing anxious surgical patients, sports performance, weight loss and more. While I am not a hypnotist, nor do I know if it’s right for everyone, I know a few people who made life changes through hypnosis and it was very successful for them.
“Mind over matter”, is a concept I can relate to. I used to live it when I achieved positive results from working out and eating right years ago. The good news is, it’s not to late to change my body , and this blog is all about change and reaching my heath and weight loss goals. I can do it with the concept of “mind over matter”.
Thanks Debbie Phillips who shared Jamie Eslinger’s blog post this morning, “day 29 may the force be with you” “Listen to yourself” which inspired today’s post.

YUM
Thank you for adding this. I’ve used lime too and you really make it so simple with the food processor.
